GB Railfreight (GBRf) has commenced two new intermodal rail services operating between DP World London Gateway and Maritime Transport’s inland terminals at Hams Hall and iPort Doncaster.
The additional routes respond to increasing container volumes at London Gateway. Maritime Transport is adapting its inland logistics network to support throughput growth at the port. According to the companies, the move aligns with shifting demand patterns and the need to strengthen inland rail connectivity from the southeastern deep-sea terminal.
The intermodal trains connect DP World London Gateway, located on the River Thames, with two of Maritime’s rail-served logistics hubs. Hams Hall, situated near Birmingham, provides access to the West Midlands, while iPort Doncaster serves South Yorkshire and surrounding regions.
This operational extension coincides with a port infrastructure project at London Gateway. DP World is beginning work on an investment valued at approximately EUR 1.17 billion intended to increase capacity. The launch of new services by GBRf comes during the early stages of this port development.
The introduction of the Hams Hall and iPort Doncaster routes increases the frequency and reach of Maritime’s national rail offerings. The company continues to position rail as part of its inland distribution strategy across the UK, in parallel with its road fleet. The service pattern, running six times weekly, enables regular movement of containers from the deep-sea terminal to key inland locations.
GB Railfreight continues to provide traction and operations for Maritime’s intermodal trains, a partnership in place since 2019. This contract extension adds further rail paths to the existing GBRf–Maritime schedule.
