ÖBB is upgrading signalling and activating an overtaking station on Tyrol’s Lower Inn Valley line to allow more passenger and freight trains to use the corridor.

The new railway between Kundl and Baumkirchen has formed the main passenger and freight corridor through Tyrol’s Lower Inn Valley since 2012. Long-distance trains can use the route at speeds of up to 220 km/h, while freight services operate through its tunnels throughout the day and night.

ÖBB will now bring previously prepared infrastructure at Vomp into operation. Around two kilometres of third and fourth tracks already exist inside the tunnel and will be connected using eight new switches, overhead line equipment and signalling technology.

The resulting overtaking station will allow freight trains to move aside while faster passenger services pass, increasing the flexibility and capacity of the mixed-traffic corridor.

ÖBB will also modify the signalling in the Münsterer and Terfener tunnels. The line already operates with ETCS, while additional conventional light signals will now be removed and block sections shortened, enabling trains to run at closer intervals.

Construction starts on 10 July and is scheduled to finish on 14 September 2026. Work will initially affect the Münsterer Tunnel between Radfeld and Jenbach until 25 July. The entire new line will then close for three days before work moves to the western Terfener Tunnel.

Long-distance trains will use the existing surface route and may arrive in Innsbruck several minutes later. From 22 August, Interregio services between Wörgl and Innsbruck will be suspended, with additional Railjet stops provided at Jenbach.

Regional REX2 and S3 services will require around two additional minutes, while CJX journeys will be extended by approximately 12 minutes. ÖBB said the updated schedules are available through its SCOTTY journey planner.

The project includes 2,000 metres of track, 25 kilometres of cabling and 800 metres of overhead line equipment.
