Delivery of the first units is planned for the final quarter of 2027, with full fleet deployment expected by early 2028.

The final design for the 11 new FLIRT InterCity EMUs ordered by GYSEV has been completed, allowing body shell production to start this autumn at Stadler’s Szolnok plant.

This batch of five-car, dual-voltage trains is being manufactured under the contract signed in March 2024, nearly three decades after Hungary last procured new InterCity multiple units. The order follows GYSEV’s previous acquisitions of 20 FLIRT regional EMUs between 2013 and 2018.

The new vehicles will be equipped with both first and second class and feature seasonal interior configuration. During the summer period, up to 18 bicycles can be transported, while in winter the layout will shift to offer increased seating capacity. Each train is designed for a top speed of 160 km/h and complies with current international energy efficiency standards.

The design, developed jointly by GYSEV, Stadler, and Innova Design Team, incorporates a silver exterior accented by GYSEV’s green and yellow corporate colours. Inside, materials include metal, glass, and oak finishes in a neutral colour palette, with emphasis on functionality.

Passenger amenities will include low-floor, air-conditioned interiors, information systems, additional luggage space, and a vending machine area. Seating will feature USB-C chargers and holders for tablets and smartphones, in addition to the standard Wi-Fi and power outlets.

Production at Stadler’s Hungarian facility will cover 55 body shells for the new fleet. Once delivered, the units will operate on GYSEV’s long-distance services connecting Sopron and Szombathely with Budapest. The dual-voltage capability will allow cross-border operation into Austria.

The project adds to Hungary’s growing inventory of Stadler-built FLIRT units. The Swiss manufacturer has sold over 2,750 FLIRTs in 21 countries since 2002. In Hungary, 20 units are already in service with GYSEV, and 123 with MÁV. The Szolnok plant has contributed to the production of nearly 1,000 FLIRT trains globally, assembling over 3,880 body shells.
